India is a land of rich culture. The variety we have in everything from food, clothing, to arts is vast and awe-inspiring. And jewellery is one of them. Our country has so many marvelous pieces of jewellery but many being forgotten. And they need to make a comeback. I know it’s gonna happen sooner or later. Because it’s a circle. And when I say comeback, I mean in its authentic form, hopefully. Not in some crazy, twisted designs.
And some of the south Indian pieces of jewellery I think are so beautiful and deserve a comeback are these. Although there might be different versions of these in different places in India, I know these from the place I grew up in.
1. Jada Kuppelu
Jadakuppelu and Jada gantalu are slightly different designs but both are hair accessories. It is tied at the end of your braid. Especially if you have long hair this accessory adds more beauty to your tenor.
I wore it when I was young, so I know how beautiful it is. Although I haven’t seen many of my friends do that, let alone my next generation. Braiding their daughters’ hair, and accessorizing is such a lovely thing but it is slowly fading away.
Anyway, this accessory is one of my favorites and every girl should try it to know how beautiful it is.
2. Surya Chandrulu
It means sun and moon. These are two round pieces of ornaments that are adorned at the top of one’s head, one on either side. We rarely see anyone wearing these gorgeous pieces these days. But again, these deserve to make a comeback. I’m an avid watcher of old classic movies and a lot of actresses in there wore these stunning ornaments. And it’s not an exaggeration when I say we can’t take our eyes off of them when they are adorned head to toe in Indian jewellery.
This is one and the other hair ornament is Jada billa which is put on the braid adding a twinkle.
3. Mukkera
There are again different kinds in this but basically, this is an ornament for your nose. Kind of like nose piercings. This has such Indian vibes to it. I love this one. I always wanted to have one but I never got to have it. Hopefully, someday in the future.
4. Kante
Kante is a neckpiece. It is like a round piece of necklace. Just like a bangle, but for the neck. I never saw this in person except in movies. My mom told me about this. That’s when I realized how creative our ancestors were even hundreds of years back.
And we also see such similar designs now and then but it’s not a popular one.
5. Patteelu
Patteelu means Anklets. The tinkling sound it makes is blissful to hear. It’s made of silver, not gold. Before every girl used to wear these, it is considered as auspicious. To bring luck. But we seldom see any girls wear it these days. If anything they will start saying how it doesn’t go with their western outfits. Anyway, this is also an ornament that brings out joys and beauty.
6. Kaasulaperu
This is also a very famous piece of jewellery our grandmothers wore. And we can also see many updated designs of this ornament these days. Similar but nowhere near the old ones. It once again proves “old is gold”.
This is it for today. I’ll see you another time. If you know any other kinds of Indian jewellery let me know in the comments. And while you are at it, know these famous Indian jewellery designers.
Until next time,
Lots of LOVE,
Nikki.
