A child’s dream of a star is my first read by Charles Dickens. And in all honesty, it left me with such a good feeling. I’m not gonna lie, it made me wonder when will I be able to write like that. I truly liked it, I felt it. I empathized with the author’s emotions, quite palpable.
I use Ipad mini and there’s this app for books which is free. I shuffled through the limited options available there and picked this: A child’s dream of a star written by Charles Dickens. Usually, I’m not an e-book reader, I like to feel the weight of a book in my hands. But stumbling upon this is quite a coincidence, a good one of course.
This is not a novel, but a personal essay. And a very short one, just 23 pages long, which is kinda longer for a standard personal essay and shorter for a regular story. But none of that matters as long as the piece is compelling to read, isn’t it? The minute I read the first line, I couldn’t stop until the end. And the moment it ended, I went back and read it again. It was that good.
But I think, I liked it as a writer more than as a reader. I observed his writing style, his word choice, and the whole narrative. It’s more like a learning experience for me.
Tired to read. You can listen to my podcast episode here:
Book Blurb:
The author narrates a brother’s love for his little sister who dies of an illness. Before his dear sister died, the brother and his sister used to watch a bright star in the sky every day. And after his sister is gone, he narrates his feelings and how he dreams of the star every night wanting to go to his sister.
And how life unfolds for that little boy is the story.
It’s short but sweet.
Why is it a good read?
- It is because the narration gives the reader a felt-experience.
- The characters are well depicted.
- Unique writing style. Usually writing from back in the day could sound a little complicated but this is not one bit so.
- And there are pictures. 😉
I highly recommend you read this. This should barely take you 30 minutes, if you’re a slow reader. But it’s definitely worth reading. I give this a 5 star rating.
Leave a comment if you’ve already read this and if you have any book recommendations for me feel free to shoot them in the comment section. Now I’m onto my next read Paradise Lost by John Milton, another epic read.
I’ll see you again.
Cheers,
Nikki.
