I know why authors usually create Pen names, to conceal their identity. That’s what usually happens, but I made a pen name for a completely different reason; it’s a good reason though. Yesterday, completely out of the blue, my mom suggested naming my pen. I asked her why because I have zero intention of concealing my identity and this is what she told me.

“You are writing so many articles and books, writing has become a part of you. It is important for you to always respect what you do. Naming your pen is a way of appreciating it. When you name your pen, you will never treat it as a thing, you will respect it and treasure it.”

Isn’t that an amazing thought?

I loved what she said. I also thought it’s something worthy and definitely unique. Although we don’t use pens much anymore, it’s all laptops and mobiles, still, pens are what represent writing. So, you got it, right? This is not another name for myself, it’s literally a name for my pen. Quite literally. If I have to write something, my pen and I both have to work together, hence my pen is just as important for me as a crown for a king. Thus, a penname. Consider this as my way of saying ‘Thank You’ to God/the Universe for giving me an opportunity to write.

So, today is Vasanth Panchami (Indian festival). We pray to goddess Saraswathi, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge, on this day. Ergo, we decided today is the perfect time to name my pen. But we only had a thought, we are not sure what to name. After a lot of contemplation, my mom said “Sarvani”. It’s one of the many names of Goddess Saraswathi. And I said “Vasudha”, again another name of Saraswathi Devi. There’s been a bit of tug of war between us leaving me all the more confused. So now, my dad has the deciding vote. Whatever he says I’ll have to go with it.

And when I asked him, he chose “Sarvani” without a hitch. When I demanded a reason, he said it has a more divine vibe to it. So, yep, that’s my pen name from now on. Now that the more I say it out loud, the more I feel Sarvani is the right choice. It sure has a ring to it, hasn’t it?!
