A cat has nine lives. If that is exciting imagine being a reader or writer. We can live a thousand lives without even moving our little fingers. With each book we pick, we live a new outlandish life that an author creates.
That’s the beauty of being in the literary world. Take JK. Rowling’s Harry Potter, for instance, the wizarding world she created isn’t just a fictional one anymore. It’s come to a living, breathing universe. What gave it a life of its own is the readers’ love for it.
Lucky for us, and thanks to such brilliant writers, such worlds come into existence every year. And 2021 is no exception either. Many beautiful books have come to us. Without any exaggeration, the pandemic would have felt harder if not for books, which gave us such good company during these isolating times.
As I said, 2021 also had its share of some amazing books. I have a list of 6 that the audience adored the most. I have seen some amazing reviews for each of these books and I can’t resist sharing them with you.
The Most Adored Books of 2021
1. The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay
This review on Goodreads tells me that this is exactly what I need in 2022.
“At 450 pages this isn’t a quick read, and the story takes its time to unspool. I never found it boring though, and it struck me that as Shalini was adjusting to the slower pace of life in a mountain village, I was being asked to do the same. The Far Field is an absorbing read and a very assured debut.”
2. The Forest of Enchantments by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
As much as I love classic storytelling, I also enjoy the retelling of classics. The forest of enchantments is the retelling of Ramayana from Sita’s point of view. What intrigued me, even more, is when the author said that it is also the story of some of the most misunderstood women of the epic like Kaikeyi, Surpanakha and Mandodari.
That’s when I knew it had to be on my TBR 2022.
3. Romancing the Balance Sheet by Anil Lamba
The title itself piqued my interest with this one. Learning more about finances is one of my goals this year and I believe this book will be a great start. The line that especially caught my eye is “There is no such thing as a non-finance person.” It’s quite assuring.
4. Adiyogi by Sadhguru
One of the bestsellers of 2021.
Of late, I got into philosophical books and stuff. It’s what I mostly read these days. That’s when I found ‘Adiyogi’ and that’s it, it made my TBR.
5. Girl in White Cotton by Avni Doshi
The reviews for this pushed me to want to read this. Because the title seemed soft and vulnerable yet the reviews were quite not what I expected.
“Taut and unsettling, a dark, ferocious novel. – Fatima Bhutto, author of The Runaways”
The Booker Prize Judges 2020 quotes, “Utterly compelling, complex, unflinching realism – sometimes emotionally wrenching but also cathartic, written with poignancy and memorability.”
6. Immunity+: Revitalise in 28 days by Dr Mickey Mehta & Sanjeev Kapoor
“Drawing from the best of ancient wisdom and modern science frontiers,” is the line that caught my interest. My mom loves books on health and wellness, so I wanted to give this one to her.
Voila!
That was my search for good books this new year. And fortunately, I found these varied subjects to have a great year in reading.
I can’t wait to read them, starting with The Forest of Enchantments.
How about you?
What intrigued you the most out of these six?
Let me know in the comments and I’ll see you soon again.
Cheers,
Nikki.
