I hadn’t read many books this year, but I purchased quite a few. And there’s this book that I was really looking forward to reading — Star-crossed. The moment I saw the book cover it called to me. Then I read the premise and I loved it. It’s right up my alley.

So simple. Fits my style perfectly.

Written by Minnie Darke.

Book Premise:

Justine Carmichael and Nick Jordan are childhood friends. One is a true believer in stars and the other is skeptical. Nevertheless, the stars are what bring their paths together.

Justine is a journalist at Alexandria Park Star and Nick, a struggling actor. One day, Justine bumps into her childhood friend, who is also her teenage crush, Nick. With rekindled feelings for Nick, Justine alters the star predictions and things turn complicated in no time.

Oh, where should I start!

As I mentioned before, I started this book with a lot of excitement. Because one, I believe in stars myself, and two, a love story at that.

But I’m a little let down by this one.

I thought it would be engaging, exciting, and romantic. A few chapters in I knew it wasn’t going to how I imagined. I’m not saying it’s bad, though. It’s okay, but I had more expectations.

First I’ll start with what I like about Star-crossed.

1. Loved the book cover. Simple and elegant.
2. The concept is quite good. Something that immediately catches a reader’s attention.
3. The language is simple — no complicated narration.

Now, the so-so.

1. Too many characters. I understand the writer meant to prove a point but the number could have brought down a bit. It gets confusing at times.
2. I couldn’t get myself to care about the characters, until the very end. In fact, I cared so less that I wished for a different end to the story. There should have been more scenes around the main characters.
3. Too much description. Things that don’t add any value to the story. Thus, the pace of the story is so slow that it took me a couple of months to finish this 387-pages book.

That’s my take on my recent read, Star-crossed.
